Historie
Bezesporu se jedná o jedno z nejstarších plemen.Ve své domovině - Číně - je znám už 3000 let. Z období před 2000 lety se dochovaly čínské hliněné sošky znázorňující předchůdce dnešního čau čaua, které jou k vidění ve francouzkém Louvru.
Je to jedinečné plemeno, v mnoha vlastnostech se odlišující od ostatních psů, že se v minulosti tradovalo, že vzniklo spojením vlka a medvěda. Zdánlivě by tomu nasvědčovala mohutná, zavalitá postava, zvláštní toporná chůze, těžké kosti, masivní lebka a modrý jazyk – údajně pozůstatek po asijských medvědech. Skutečnost je samozřejmě někde jinde a není zdaleka tak fascinující. Všechny výše uvedené znaky fakticky svědčí spíše o tom, že čau čau má blíže než ostatní špicové ke psům dogovitým. Jeho nejbližším příbuzným je čínský šarpej. Čaou čau se dlouhá léta v Číně choval se jako pes lovecký, tažný a také pro maso.
Do Evropy se dostal v roce 1865 a brzy se z něj stal módní pes. Již v roce 1895 byl v Anglii založen klub chovatelů tohoto plemene.
Využití a povaha
Je to klidný pes, dobrý strážce, se zvláštním typickým chůdovitým pohybem. Nezávislý, věrný, ale poněkud rezervovaný. Lovecké pudy má silně zakořeněné, takže v lese by měl chodit jen na vodítku. Nejen vzhledem patří čau čau ke skutečným samorostům. Jeho introvertní, do sebe uzavřená povaha nesnášející příkazy a omezování, téměř nekomunikující s cizími lidmi a úzce vázaná jen na jednoho člověka z něj udělala nejtypičtější příklad „psa jednoho pána“. Říká se, že i v rámci rodiny si vybere jen jednoho člověka, jemuž věnuje svou bezmeznou lásku, toleruje však i další blízké lidi. Prý je ochotný pro pána kdykoliv zemřít, ale málokdy ho poslechne. Využívá se jako hlídací a společenský pes.
Vzhled
Aktivní pes s krátkou, kompaktní a uzavřenou stavbou těla, velice dobře vyvážený, lvího vzhledu, hrdého a důstojného nesení těla, kompaktního rámce, s modročerným jazykem, ocas je nesen nad hřbetem. Lebka je plochá a široká, dobře vyplněná pod očima. Stop je nevyjádřený. Tlama je střední délky, široká od očí až ke špičce nosu. Uši jsou malé, silné, s mírně zaoblenou špičkou, pevně nesené a široce nasazené, ale nakloněné nad oči a mírně vzájemně k sobě, což psovi dodává zvláštní zamračený výraz, který je charakteristický pro plemeno. Krk je silný, plný, hřbet je krátký, rovný a silný, hrudník je široký a hluboký. Charakteristický je krátký chůdovitý krok. Hrudní a pánevní končetiny se pohybují vzájemně rovnoběžně a přímo vpřed. Srst je dlouhá nebo krátká.
Dlouhá srst: bohatá, hustá, rovná a odstávající. Krycí srst má poměrně hrubou texturu, podsada je jemná a hustá. Zvláště bohatá je srst kolem krku, vytvářející hřívu nebo límec, a na zadní straně stehen, kde vytváří kalhotky.
Krátká srst: krátká, bohatá, hustá, rovná, odstávající, nikoliv ploše přiléhající, s plyšovou texturou.
Barva: celé tělo zbarvené černě, červeně, modře, béžově, krémově nebo bíle, často v mírně různých odstínech, ale nikoliv s různobarevnými skvrnami nebo vícebarevné (spodní část ocasu a zadní strana stehen jsou často světlejší barvy).
Výška v kohoutku: Psi:48 až 56 cm v plecích. Feny: 46 až 51 cm v plecích.
Péče
Vzhledem ke své specifické povaze by si ho měli pořizovat jen lidé dobře obeznámeni s jeho typickými vlastnostmi. K výchově je třeba přistupovat trpělivě a důsledně, s výcvikem u něj moc nepochodíte. Pokud chcete mít psa ve společné domácnosti s jiným zvířaty a dětmi, začněte ho na ně přivykat ve štěněcím věku, aby později nedošlo k potížím. Absolutně se nehodí do kotce, potřebuje dostatek prostoru, ideální je pro něj velká zahrada s přístupem do domu ke své lidské smečce. Nestojí o sportovní aktivity, ale procházky má rád. Jeho hustá srst vyžaduje pravidelné kartáčování.
